WHY
MOROCCO?

I'm often asked "why Morocco?" so over the next few blog posts, I'll attempt to share what it is about this beautiful country that has captured my heart and why it feels like home every time I return.

REASON #1:
ART, ARCHITECTURE and ARTISAN WORK

From the moment I landed in Marrakech in October 2023, I've been obsessed with Morocco's extraordinary artistry—the architecture, the tilework, the masterful craftsmanship. Every surface tells a story through layers of texture and color that makes my heart thrum with excitement; the hand-cut intricacy of zellige tile, the delicate carvings in wood, brass and plaster, jewel-toned stained glass, graceful arched doorways, terracotta-tiled rooftops cascading down hillsides. The artistry extends beyond architecture to hand-thrown pottery glazed in deep blues, greens and earthen colors, intricately woven rugs and textiles in geometric patterns passed down through generations, and traditional clothing that transforms everyday life into moving art. Even in the most remote, mountain and desert villages, you'll find decorative ironwork gracing windows and painted doors in unexpected, glorious colors.

There is artistic beauty and craftsmanship everywhere you look and it's almost impossible to describe; you must experience it yourself.

CRAFTED IN STONE & SOUL

Morocco is not just a destination; it is a masterpiece built by hand. And it is mind-blowing. From the soaring minarets to the ancient Kasbahs, every stone tells a story of artisans who have perfected their craft over centuries.

THE ART
OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

We pay homage to the hypnotic precision of Moroccan craftsmanship—zellige tile-making, hand carved wood and plaster, and hand hammered and cut brass that define Morocco's architectural beauty. Our cultural immersion tours take you into the workshops where masters chip tiny geometric shapes from glazed clay, assembling them into the breathtaking mosaics that adorn palaces and fountains, while woodcarvers transform cedar into intricate patterns and metalworkers hammer brass into pierced lanterns and massive decorative doors.

TWO TOURS:
WHICH ONE SPEAKS TO YOUR HEART?

The Magical Morocco tour focuses on the outstanding art, architecture and artisan work of selected unique northern cities including the exquisite Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, the third largest mosque in Africa and the only mosque in Morocco open to non-muslims. We'll witness the juxtaposition of ancient and modern architecture in Rabat, the UNESCO 3rd century BC Roman site of Volubilis and the teeming souk of Fes, a massive, maze-like, medieval marketplace offering a sensory-rich experience of traditional Moroccan life including a zellige and pottery collective, the metalsmithing quarter and the oldest and largest tannery in the world. We'll travel through the mountains and desert to ride camels and glamp in the Sahara before turning west once more.

The Southern Morocco tour offers an immersive journey into the living traditions that shaped North Africa and Iberian artistry, tracing craft heritage from Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains to the courts of Moorish dynasties whose aesthetic influence spread across Spain. We visit a women's weaving collective where artisans work traditional looms, creating symbolic patterns that serve as visual language passed down through generations, see the stark beauty and architecture of remote villages, and examine tribal Berber jewelry before traveling to the windswept coastal city of Essaouira, where master craftsmen carve fragrant thuya wood - found only in this region - into intricate boxes and decorative pieces using centuries-old techniques.

Both journeys culminate in Marrakech, where Morocco's artistic traditions collide in glorious abundance: souks overflowing with jewel-toned zellige telework, hand-hammered brass lanterns, and textiles in every conceivable pattern. It's a sensory feast of color, texture, and sound that immerses you in Morocco's living artistic soul.
